    Summary

The Georgia-Pacific Foundation uses its Four Focus Areas (Four E's): Education, Environment, Enrichment of Community and Entrepreneurship as guideposts for giving, both in terms of grants provided to nonprofit organizations and in decision-making around employee participation in company-sponsored volunteer programs.

The foundation will consider the following factors when reviewing proposals:

    • Will the program have a positive impact on a community near/where a Georgia-Pacific facility is located?
    • Does the program support education, the environment, community enrichment and/or entrepreneurship?
    • Does the program create tangible value, long-term impact of the well-being, and measurable return on investment in the community?
    • Is the project sustainable after the conclusion of GP support?

    Additional Information

The foundation uses their resources to strengthen communities and improve quality of life, primarily in the areas of education, environment, enrichment and entrepreneurship. The foundation has detailed the following in regards to these 4 areas of interest:

    1. Education: We see education as the key that unlocks every person's potential. We're proud to support a wide array of community-based educational programs that help transition students from school to the workforce with scholarships, job readiness training, and technical programs. In short, we help provide students and workers with the skills needed to succeed and move forward in today's workplace. Education focus areas include college scholarships, job training, literacy, K-12 public schools and teacher development.
    2. Enrichment: Safe communities and affordable housing are critical. That's why we support programs that provide housing like Habitat for Humanity and projects that help make our communities safer like Bucket Brigade. Enrichment focus areas include affordable housing, community and public safety, arts and culture, youth enrichment and volunteerism.
    3. Environment: We believe protecting the environment starts with everyday choices. Sustainability is part of what we do every day. It's using resources efficiently to make products that improve people's lives, working with outside organizations to develop the scientific expertise needed to sustain our natural resources and bringing stakeholders together to develop solutions to protect our world's most ecologically important habitats. We also have supported developing eco-savvy 4th and 5th graders, with our Education in Nature program including videos, lesson plans and downloads that facilitate fun environmental education. Environment focus areas include resource conservation, clean air, clean water, recycling and environmental education.
    4. Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurs are often the spark behind community growth and vibrancy. We nurture this spirit with educational and business programs. We are specifically interested in programs that teach practical economic principles, the benefits of a free enterprise system, and real-world business skills to our youth. In addition to supporting educational programs for youth, we also support organizations that build capacity in small, minority, and women-owned businesses.

In addition to grants and other financial support, the Foundation uses different resources to enrich and strengthen GP communities through disaster relief, community collaboration, and volunteerism.
