    The Kresge Foundation is a private, national foundation that works to expand opportunities in America's cities through grantmaking and investing in arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services and community development efforts in targeted US cities such as Detroit.

    The foundation makes single and multi-year grants. The types of funding supported by the foundation include:

    • Operating Support Grants;
    • Project Support Grants; and
    • Program-related Investments

    The Foundation funds the following programs and initiatives:

    • American Cities: expand opportunity by promoting effective and inclusive community development practices in American cities
    • Arts & Culture: position culture and creativity as drivers of more just communities
    • Detroit: promote and expand long-term, equitable opportunity in Kresge's hometown by centering the priorities of its residents.
    • Education: increase college access and success while reducing inequitable student outcomes in the U.S. and South Africa.
    • Environment: help cities implement climate change mitigation and adaptation approaches grounded in equity.
    • Health: build equity-focused systems of health that create opportunities for all people to achieve well-being.
    • Human Services: Expanding opportunities in American cities by centering racial equity to advance social and economic mobility for families and communities.
    • Social Investment Practice: work across Kresge's seven program teams to strengthen neighborhoods and improve the quality of life in America's cities by addressing barriers to capital.
     

    History of Funding

    The following are not eligible:
    • Individuals
    • Organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, citizenship status, age, disability, sexual orientation or veteran status
    • Organizations that require membership in a certain religion or advance a particular religious faith. Faith-based organizations may be eligible for funding if they welcome and serve all members of the community regardless of religious belief

  • Eligibility Details

    U.S. non-profit organizations or the international equivalent are eligible to apply for funding through the Kresge Foundation. Government entities and faith-based organizations are eligible to apply. Some funding areas require an invitation by the foundation prior to submittal of an application, therefore it is strongly recommended that interested applicants reach out to the appropriate foundation contact early in the grant seeking process.

    Deadline Details

    Most often, the Foundation invites applicants. Occasionally, program teams issue an open call for LOIs within a focus area.
