Summary

Fire Protection Grants provide funds to municipalities and county fire districts for use in operation, maintenance and betterment of local fire departments, to the end that the hazard of loss by fire and fire insurance rates may be reduced and the public safety thereby promoted.
Eligible costs include, but are not limited to the following (as long as a valid need is present):
- Exercise and fitness equipment
- Bunker gear and Personal Protective Equipment
- Hand tools (Axes, Pike Poles, etc)
- Fire Hose (Handlines and Supply Lines)
- Nozzles
- Chain and K-12 Saws
- Generators
- Portable Lighting
- Salvage Covers
- Radio Communications Equipment (handheld and mobile Radios, repeaters, antennas, etc.)
- Office Supplies
- Internet Service (for NFIRS reporting, and Training)
- Computers
- Televisions, DVD, LCD Projectors, Screens, etc.
- Training Manuals (Essentials of Firefighting, Fire Chief's Handbook, etc)
- First Aid Supplies for apparatus
- Extrication Equipment
- Thermal Imaging Cameras
- Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, SCBA Compressors, and Cascade Systems
- On-Site Water Storage Systems (tanks)
- Security Equipment for Stations (Cameras, Burglar Alarms, Etc.)
- Washers and Driers for Bunker Gear
- Uniforms (i.e. Station uniforms, Pants, Shirts, T-Shirts, etc)
- Fire Station furnishings, appliances, etc.
Grants funds may also be utilized for recurring monthly and annual operating expenses, including:
- Automotive Fire Apparatus and Liability Insurance
- Life Insurance
- Monthly Electricity Bills for Fire Stations
- Monthly Gas or LPG Bills for Stations
- Monthly Telephone & Internet Bills (leasing of telephone equipment is not allowed)
- Monthly Cellular Telephone Bills (Limit 2 phones per fire department)
- Cost Shared Fees for Dispatch services, which are pro-rated equally between all fire departments /districts serviced by the communications center.
If a particular item is not listed which a fire department/district wishes to purchase, applicants are encouraged to contact the Fire Service Support Bureau with any questions.

Additional Information

Two types of Grant Applications:
- Individual Department Grant
- County-Wide Project Grant
Joint applications will not be considered.
Eligibility Details

All fire departments currently certified and funded by the New Mexico State Fire Marshal's Office are eligible to apply for an Individual Department Grant. County offices having administrative responsibility for more than one district or department may apply for a County-Wide Project Grant providing that each district or department that is under their jurisdiction is compliant with the requirements of the grant. The County-Wide Grant project must benefit all the departments.
A County Administrative Office applying for a grant or the application for a County-Wide Grant does not prevent individual departments within the county from applying for a grant
Deadline Details

Applications are to be submitted by August 31, 2025. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.
Award Details

The amount awarded to a single applicant will not exceed $400,000 for:
- Facility construction
- Major facility improvements or repairs
- Land acquisition
- Training facilities
The amount awarded to a single applicant will not exceed $300,000 for:
- Apparatus and NFPA equipment
- A single large infrastructure project (to include water supply systems and communications infrastructure projects)
- SCBA and/or air support systems such as air compressors, cascade systems and mobile fill systems
The amount awarded to a single applicant will not exceed $150,000 for:
- PPE-Structural, wildland, extractors, Haz-mat and ballistic protection
- Communications- Mobile radios, handheld radios and base stations
In addition to the projects applied for, up to $25,000 may be requested by municipal departments with a volunteer staff or a county-wide request may be made for the purpose of providing stipends, supplementing recruiting and retention programs or educational programs for volunteer fire fighters.
Minimum matching funds:
- Grant requests of $10,000 or less require no matching commitment;
- Grant requests of $10,001 to $50,000 require a 5% commitment;
- Grant requests of $50,001 to $100,000 require a 10% commitment; and
- Grant requests of $100,001 to $200,000 require a 20% commitment.
