The foundation works on the issues our founders cared about most. They also invest in efforts to learn from our work and increase the impact of our investments through targeted evaluation and communications grants.

While David and Lucile Packard played important roles in founding Hewlett-Packard (now known as HP) and establishing the success of the technology company, they created the David and Lucile Packard Foundation as a completely separate entity to help direct their family's philanthropic activities. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation remains unaffiliated with HP, the technology company.

The problems the Packard Foundation seeks to solve are complex, requiring long-term commitment to create lasting change. They select their partners thoughtfully, consistently evaluate their progress, and adjust strategies when needed. The foundation's resources are small compared to these challenges, so they are unable to fund all requests they receive. In a typical year, about 15 percent of Pack Foundation grants are awarded to first-time grantees and less than one percent come from unsolicited proposals.
The Foundation accepts grant proposals only for charitable, educational, or scientific purposes, primarily from tax-exempt, charitable organizations.
