    Aetna focuses its grant making on issues that improve health and the health care system and that aim to help low-income, vulnerable and medically underserved people live healthier lives. Learn more about our Regional Grants and National Grants.


    The Foundation focuses on the following areas:

    • Community Grants - The Aetna Foundation provides grants to community-based initiatives that encourage healthy eating and active living. The Foundation provides this funding through our GoLocal: Cultivating Healthy Communities program. Grantees are dynamic, dedicated and driven to achieve positive change in schools and neighborhoods.
    • National Grants and Partnerships - The Aetna Foundation partners with organizations and support initiatives that can improve the health of large numbers of people. Our work in this arena focuses on achieving greater health-care equity through research, technology, policy and leadership.

    The Foundation generally does not fund:

    • Endowment or capital costs, including construction, renovation or equipment
    • Direct delivery of reimbursable health care services
    • Basic biomedical research
    • Grants or scholarships to individuals
    • Work for which results and impact cannot be measured
    • Advertising
    • Golf tournaments
    • Advocacy, political causes or events
    • Sacramental or theological functions of religious organizations
    • Operational expenses or existing financial deficits
    • Event sponsorships

  • Eligibility Details

    Aetna Foundation funding is provided only to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) or similar tax-exempt status and educational institutions.

    Deadline Details

    Currently, Aetna only accept unsolicited proposals for our Regional Grants Program, and these proposals must be submitted through our online system. The Aetna Foundation may, on occasion, solicit proposals that fall outside of the regional focus and/or geographic area. These strategic opportunities are staff-identified, solicited and developed. Invitations to submit proposals will be issued at the discretion of the Aetna Foundation.
